What are call numbers and what do they mean?

Answer

A call number is like an address, it's a piece of information that tells you where an item is located. Each physical item in the library has a unique call number.

Saskatchewan Polytechnic Libraries use the Library of Congress Classification for call numbers. This system uses a combination of letters and numbers to arrange materials by subjects. Because books and other materials are classified by subject, you can often find several helpful books on the same shelf, or nearby.

Here is a call number and what the parts represent:

PN 6112       Subject

.H615           Author's Last name

2002            Publication Date

If you need help finding a particular book on the shelf, please let us know!
